TUBERCULOSIS

Civil society to play a new important role in TB control in India
The Union is one of the three principal recipients of a US$ 199.54 million Global Fund grant for a five-year TB control project in India.The grant agreement has just been signed and the co-recipients are the Government of India and World Vision India. The project is the largest of its kind that focuses on MDR-TB and civil society participation in TB control. Read more »

ADF brings costs of quality-assured medicines down by nearly half
The cost of treating asthma with essential medicines has dropped by nearly half for countries working with The Union’s Asthma Drug Facility (ADF). The ADF is a procurement mechanism that makes it possible for low- and middle-income countries to obtain quality-assured essential asthma medicines at affordable prices. Read more »

 

RESEARCH / CLINICAL TRIALS

Clinical trials study use of rifabutin with ART in co-infected patients
The Clinical Trials Division is conducting clinical trials in South Africa and Vietnam that will provide important information on how to improve the management of TB/HIV co-infected patients with the use of rifabutin. In South Africa, patient recruitment was completed in April, and preliminary results are due in June. A sister trial in Vietnam is scheduled to begin soon. Both trials have been sponsored by the Agence Nationale de Recherche sur la Sida (ANRS) and Fondation Total funds the Vietnamese trial. Read more »

 

TOBACCO CONTROL / RUSSIA

Tobacco control presentation in Azerbaijan stimulates new interest
On 9 April 2010, the representatives of the Azerbaijan Health Communication Association made a presentation on tobacco control at the Ministry of Education Republican Centre for Ecological Studies. More than 20 representatives of the Centre, as well as teachers and students from the schools involved in the Centre’s activities, participated in this event. Read more »

 

TOBACCO CONTROL / MIDDLE EAST

Middle East Office holds project management training
A five-day training course on Project Management for Tobacco Control was conducted in Egypt by The Union Middle East office on 26-30 April. The 19 participants from Egypt, Pakistan and Lebanon came from government, university, institute and NGO positions in tobacco control at the national and provincial level. The course was delivered in English with simultaneous Arabic translation. Course evaluations showed that 100% of the participants found it relevant and useful. Read more »

 

TOBACCO CONTROL / SOUTH-EAST ASIA

Health Worker Guide launched by India’s National Tobacco Control Programme
India’s National Tobacco Control Programme has published a Health Worker Guide to sensitise health workers and encourage them to educate their communities about the dangers of tobacco and help them to quit tobacco use. The guide was developed by the Directorate General of Health Services, Government of India in collaboration with The Union. It will be translated into several languages and disseminated through India’s National Rural Health Mission to some million health workers. Read more »

Combating anti-tuberculosis drug resistance
The May issue of the International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (IJTLD) contains two key papers that discuss different aspects of the pressing problem of anti-tuberculosis drug resistance. This is the fifth article in the State of the Art series on Drug Resistance, edited by Chiang Chen-Yuan.

Middle East and Africa Region elections and other news.
The members of the Africa and Middle East Regions recently held electronic elections for new officers. Region officers coordinate the activities of the region.

The role of the Regions was high on the agenda of the Board’s Communications, Membership and Fundraising Committee, which met in April in Paris. They discussed ways to bring The Union closer to its members both through the Region officers and The Union offices
